Elsie Jepson graduated
from high school at age 15 and from college at age 19. She did
that at a time (1930's) when it was rare for women to attend
high school, much less college. But then, "Elsie" was
rare --- and very special. "Elsie" (no last name required!)
spent the next 57 years devoting her life to the education and
well-being of children in the Ken-Ton school district, beginning
her career in 1944 as a social studies teacher at Kenmore High
School (now Kenmore Middle School). She was also But, it was her appointment as coordinator of pupil services in 1963, which made Elsie "the stuff of legends". One of the most respected educators in WNY, Elsie was a tireless champion for children's rights - especially those with special needs. Parents found her "perceptive, compassionate, understanding and truly professional" in helping their disabled children get the special education services and support their children needed to be successful. She loved "her kiddies" and worked diligently for them until the day she died. Even with her very busy work schedule, Elsie found time to volunteer at several local United Way agencies, including the Heritage Centers and Buffalo Hearing and Speech. Elsie was awarded the Educators of the Year Award and Service to Children, Youth and Community Award from the Niagara Frontier Association of Pupil Service Administrators. Today we honor the memory of Elsie Jepson by awarding the Elsie Jepson Scholarship award for deserving students with special needs. The Ken-Ton Friends of Youth feel privileged to be leaders in this endeavor. Elsie exemplifies the values that are at the very heart of the Ken-Ton Friends of Youth Foundation. We are confident that nothing would make our beloved Elsie happier than the knowledge that she continues to give "her kiddies" opportunities to be the best they can be. The legend continues . . .
